“The pictures of my great-relatives were taken in Austria between 1910-1938. They show the Austrian national dress – the Wienerdirndl – as well as more daring, masculine clothes for winter sports. Also shown here a a more elegant, suited dress for about town in Vienna which was in its heyday.
I also include a picture of my grandmother’s haberdashery shop in Vienna, where she sold fabrics and tailor-made clothes to the society ladies of the time. This shop was destroyed on ‘Kristallnacht’ in 1938. We only have what my grandmother could bring with her in her pockets, or was sent to her when she was in England after 1938.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to share. Telling these stories is so important, so I’m really pleased you’re doing this project.”
