“This is a handmade embroidered silk-sheet used to carry clean clothes and bathing essentials. It was a wedding gift for my great-grandmother in Aleppo, Syria. The sheet dates back to the 1940s. The public baths, or hammams, were vital social centres in Aleppo, allowing women to escape from the isolation of their houses.
I took these photos whilst in London (2019) as part of the archival collection for my practice-based PhD.”
