“I grew up in Lancashire in the 1960s, an identical twin and one of four girls! When we were little our parents didn’t have a lot of money and our grandma used to make all our clothes. She prided herself on cutting out four dresses from as little fabric as possible. I can remember going with grandma and our mum to the fabric stall at the market to choose dress fabric, then on to the haberdashery stall to choose matching ribbons for our long hair.
Looking at these photos the fabrics really take me back in time, especially the early 1970s orange crimplene. The blue dress printed with coloured squares was my earliest favourite dress that I can remember. I named it my ‘tutti frutti’ dress after the sweets that were popular at this time.”
