Mordechai Zvi Neiman. Traditional Romanian Somboluri, Embroidery, Dobrogea region
“My practice explores my roots and family tree through aspects of migration and diaspora. I was born to a family of mixed cultures; Romanian, Ukrainian, and Uzbeki/Azerbaijan.
I found out that my father was not my biological father, and this void sent me in search of him. My journey has led me to explore intricate connections through textiles, fabrics, patterns and traditional clothing. Combining these with found family photos, I am trying to weave together a visual representation of who I am.
I begin by identifying family members through DNA matching, then from images of confirmed family members I examine embroidery patterns, identifying their region.
My creative process involves screen printing techniques with layers of tulle showing the individual's place of birth. Hand and machine embroidery is used to create each portrait, integrating the facial features with the traditional embroidered design of the region.
This is an ongoing practice, which I can only describe as a labour of love. It is often emotional, sometimes frustrating, but always enjoyable.”
